It is not uncommon for someone to reach for the phone and immediately call an Air Conditioning Contractor as soon as they realize their air conditioner is not working. However, there are a few things that you should check for before you call a contractor. These small problems can be easily fixed, and you can save yourself some money by checking for these problems before you call someone to fix the problem. Here is what you should do if your air conditioner is not working.

Check the Thermostat:

If your air conditioning unit is not properly working, the first thing you should do is to check the thermostat. You may not realize that your wife shut off the air, or that your children pushed buttons and changed your desired settings. Or, the battery supplying power to the thermostat may simply need to be replaced. Looking at your thermostat will clue you in to any potential problems that may be causing your unit not to kick on.

Replace Your Filters:

Believe it or not, many people think that their air conditioning unit is not when, when in reality, their filters are so full that the cold air can’t travel through the filters. Replacing these filters will allow your cooled air to properly flow into your home once again.

Wipe Down a Ground Unit:

If your air conditioning unit is on your roof, you may not want to do this step, unless you feel comfortable climbing on your roof. However, if you have a unit that is placed on the ground, you can easily perform this step. Grab a rag and dampen it with cool water. Then take the rag, and wipe down the vents on your air conditioning unit. These vents can become so clogged with dirt, dust, bugs and other outdoor debris, that the unit may have trouble sucking in air. If that happens, there is no air to cool. Wiping down the unit removes this debris, so air can once again be pulled in.

f none of these techniques solve the problem, it is time to call an Air Conditioning Contractor. They can further troubleshoot your air conditioning unit and determine what is causing the problem.
